Eat your leftovers in the storm!

I love to eat and my wife is an incredible cook; one of the many things that I love about her! I also enjoy some good leftovers. Nothing beats a reheated pizza or a turkey leg. Leftovers can remind us of what we had and how we got it. Jesus uses this simple act to help His disciples. In Mathew 14, a great multitude of people are following him. They want so much to be in His presence but the day is getting late. Some guy, who I can identify with, says “it’s getting late Lord, we can’t feed all these people.” Jesus simply responds, “you feed them!”.

Mat 14 - But when the multitudes heard it, they followed Him on foot from the cities. 14 And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick. 15 When it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.” 16 But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

We all know the story, but I want to focus on what happened after that. Soon the disciples would find themselves in a storm. The fishermen are scared and not sure if they would make it across. What they didn’t pay attention to, were the leftovers from the miracle that had just happened a few hours before. Jesus had them collect all the leftover food from when the Father had multiplied it. They had 12 baskets of leftovers.

20 So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained. 21 Now those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

I sometimes forget the previous miracle in my life! How quickly I can forget that the Lord brought me through a trial and I sometimes act as if He’s never done anything for me. While we are on this earth there will be plenty of storms but this I promise; the Lord is faithful to carry us through! Our job is to let Him in!

31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

33 Then those who were in the boat [f]came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.”

What a loving God we have!!
